But the expansive new premises also offer many other benefits and services to customers.

Far from presenting a sombre environment, the Cancer Council Shop offers a bright and colourful background to shopping.

'A lot of our new lines have caused much laughter,' said manager Sue Rowlands.

'And customers enjoy the happy brightness and comforting ambience of our shop.'

Ms Rowlands said three new retail categories had increased the scope of the Cancer Council Shop.

They are:

n Cancer Smart Health: this offers cook books, meditation books, exercise mats, weights and water-filter equipment among its products.

n Practical care: included in this range are head accessories for women who have lost hair as a result of chemotherapy treatment, pill boxes, Aloe Vera and Sorbolene ranges and the Blistex range which offers skin products for people who may have sensitive skin after radiotherapy

n Fund raising: this invites customers to give a gift to help fight cancer. By buying from the Cancer Council Shop, customers can help support work in research and education.
